Got a good secret fishing spot? Don’t tell Kelly Hrudey. He’ll spill the beans, and on national
television no less. That’s what he did
on Saturday night when he let the cat of the bag about the un-defendable spot
on a goalie. I for one would like to
know what he was thinking.
I imagine Kelly must not play anymore. He must not worry about the legions of duffers like me who are struggling just to keep up with everybody’s brand new shot courtesy of one-piece sticks. Not enough to stop him from going on the most popular hockey broadcast in Canada and yadda-yadda-yadda about the most vulnerable spot on a goalie, even the technically solid ones. Just when I thought that everyone would spend the rest of the year trying to perfect Marek Malik’s between-the-legs-shot he pipes up and tells everyone where to shoot. Thanks Kelly, I used to like you.
What’s he going to spill the beans on next – black wooly buggers? diminished and seventh chords? – will he blow it all and give away Grandma’s pasta sauce recipe? Some things are meant to be well-guarded secrets. But not with Kelly Hrudey.
Now, as I said, I’m just a duffer. I play in a couple of pick-up games a week. There are a few shooters I play with who know all about the spot. I have spoken with them about it, in hushed tones around darkened corners. I am sure they are upset too. They had a piece of a secret and were not about to broadcast one of the reasons for their success. I am sure I will receive their support as well as that of the un-official goalie union when I stand on a soap-box a say, “Kelly Hrudey, I’m putting you on notice.”

Ah don't worry too much, it's not like anyone in the US saw it. We don't get HNIC (unless via DirecTV's NHL Center Ice). When I was in San Jose a few years ago for the Leafs vs. Sharks game my brother and I saw the CBC hauler parked out back, and asked if Don was in the building. The response we got from everyone was "Don who?". Your secrete may be out in Canada, but it's still save south of the boarder.
